Why are we the "SBCMC" sometimes and the "BCMC" at others?
Our conference was originally chartered as an organization of Southern Baptist Convention-affiliated ministers of music, denominational music employees, and state Southern Baptist leaders. During the past several years, we have acknowledged that with the advent of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and the establishment of churches and state organizations which may be aligned with one or both Baptist fellowships, our scope needs to widen. We wish to gather under the banner of Christian first, Baptist second, and to focus on our similarities rather than our differences.
Several years ago, it was decided that our legal charter would remain "Southern Baptist Church Music Conference" because of the legal hurdles we would encounter should we attempt to change it. Officially, that is our name, but it was also decided that we would informally use the name "Baptist Church Music Conference" in respect of our varied membership.
