Teaching the Church to Sing: Why Choirs Still Matter
| General
Nearly every week, pastors call me looking for a worship leader for their church. The truth? We don’t have many. But an even deeper reality is this—we are not equipping our churches to sing or to worship.
We often assume people know how to worship, and that it will “just happen.” Yet many walk into our churches and leave unchanged. Worship has been reduced in some minds to “the songs we sing,” but biblically, worship is far more—it’s setting aside our own wants and desires, giving all we have in response to the God we serve. And yes, that includes singing!
The Bible never says, “Thou shalt have a choir,” but it overflows with examples of God’s people lifting their voices together. From the temple choirs of David and Solomon (1 Chron. 15:16; 2 Chron. 5:12–14) to the glorious chorus in heaven (Rev. 5:9–12), choirs have always been a beautiful part of God’s design for worship.
If we teach the “why?”—this is what choirs can do:
They can remind us of where we’ve come from in God’s story…
From David’s time, choirs of trained singers filled the temple with praise (1 Chron. 15:16; 25:1–7). In Solomon’s day, their worship was so pure that God’s glory filled the temple (2 Chron. 5:12–14). These choirs weren’t for entertainment—they were acts of corporate worship that welcomed God’s presence.
They can help lead worship…
In 2 Chron. 20:21–22, singers led Israel’s army into battle, proving worship is a weapon. Many Psalms are marked “for the choir director”—music leadership was expected. A choir helps guide God’s people into unified, wholehearted praise.
They also proclaim God’s Word with a melody…
Colossians 3:16 calls believers to let Scripture dwell richly—through singing. Choirs teach and embed biblical truth in hearts, using music’s unique power to stir both memory and emotion.
They can help us model unity…
Like the Body of Christ in 1 Corinthians 12, a choir blends many voices into one purpose. Revelation pictures heaven filled with unified worship—choirs on earth give us a foretaste of that eternal song.
They can offer beauty and excellence…
Psalm 33:3 urges skillful, joyful praise. Choirs bring their best to glorify God, using harmonies and artistry to inspire awe and reverence.
They can create ministry opportunities…
Not everyone preaches, but many can serve through music (Psalm 100:2). Choirs give believers a place to use God-given gifts to bless the congregation and honor the Lord.
If we want future worship leaders, we must first raise worshipers. We can’t wait until adulthood to teach people to sing—it’s too late. We need to lay the foundation now, teaching not only how to sing, but why we sing.
Choirs are not “extra music” —they are essential. They help form worshipers, teach Scripture through song, and give us a taste of heaven’s harmony here on earth.
